Introduction
The Social Security Administration (SSA) asked the National Research Council (NRC) to survey published research on assessment of hearing and the auditory demands of everyday life and to advise them whether the process of determining eligibility for Social Security disability benefits for persons with hearing loss could be improved. The SSA also requested recommendations for a research agenda to address unanswered questions in these areas. The Committee on Disability Determination for Individuals with Hearing Impairment (the committee) was charged with answering these questions.
